“Open Programs” for fall 2007
 

Our Open Programs are inspiring and innovative classes open to Wondertree Learners, SelfDesign learners and the home learning community at large. The classes are facilitated by mentors who are passionate about what they do and are excited to share their knowledge and enthusiasm. These classes offer children an opportunity to join with other Vancouver-based children and participate in something they love.

The following Open Programs will be available to home learners beginning this October.
 

Body Science
Mentor: Lauren Goldman

Knowledge is power! Body Science workshops are a fun and age-appropriate way to learn the information you need to take care of your growing and changing body. Come join us while we separate fact from fiction, discover hormones, explore different kinds of families and play lots of games. Finally, you can get all the answers to all your body-related questions. Please bring your curiosity! (This class will include an information evening for parents on the evening of the first Thursday.)

Introduction to Model Making

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to design your own dream home, fort, or car?   Would you like to see these imaginary creations come to life?   This course will introduce you to the skills and techniques needed to realize these creations as scale models.   Throughout the course you will get the chance to work with many different materials in order to create a variety of models.   We will discover how wood, plasticine, cardboard and polystyrene can be transformed into buildings, scenic woods, trains, robots and much more.   By the end of the course we will be able to bring our creations together as a model village of our individual ideas.  

Introduction to Painting Mentor: Maren Darboven

How does a painter choose what materials to use?   How do these materials change when applied to different surfaces? Discover what you can do in this creative painting course designed to give participants a taste of different tools of the trade.   We will paint using tempera, acrylic and water colours on different surfaces (fine paper, canvas, glass) and create stunning pieces of art.   We will also do some work with framing.   We will draw our inspiration from the Haida people, Picasso and our own imaginations!   The course will culminate in a group art show.
